A Study in Perception and Hidden Beauty

About this series

Hi, I’m Angelina—a family and motherhood photographer based in Sydney.

This month, I’m sharing a 31-day colour challenge: a gentle exploration of how colour shapes our memories, our emotions, and the quiet beauty of everyday life. Each day, I’ll be reflecting on a different hue—through photos, stories, and the little wonders I find when I slow down and look closely.

Thanks for being here.

The Colour Purple – A Study in Perception and Hidden Beauty

Some colours feel like they’re keeping a secret.

Today, purple whispered through my lens—not loud or showy, but full of presence.

It showed up in the skin of mangosteens, in soft clusters of grapes, and in petals that seemed to float more than sit. A quiet collection of beauty, asking to be noticed. I gathered what I had: ripe grapes, purple vegetables, soft florals, and mangosteens—those curious little fruits with royal skin and hidden treasure inside.

There was something calming about their togetherness. As though they belonged to the same soft song.

Colour Insight

Purple is a colour the eye doesn’t truly see.

It doesn’t exist in the visible spectrum—not like red or green. Instead, our minds create it—by blending the calm of blue and the fire of red. A quiet alchemy of contrast and cooperation.

I find that kind of beautiful.

It reminds me that not everything precious is obvious.

Some things—like joy, or meaning, or love—aren’t handed to us fully formed.

They’re made in the noticing.

They live in the in-between.

The Everyday Wonder

Today, purple appeared in ordinary things—but they didn’t feel ordinary.

The weight of a grape in my palm.

The skin of a mangosteen, dark and regal, guarding something sweet.

The flower blooming where no one was watching.

The forgotten lavender crayon on the floor.

The shade between shadow and light.

Maybe purple is just a metaphor for the magic we’re willing to see—even when it isn’t right there in front of us.

What are the purples you choose to see today?

What quiet wonders are asking to be noticed?
